Criminal Minds is an American police procedural crime drama television series, focusing on profiling the criminal, called the unsub or "unknown subject", rather than the crime itself.
Episode synopsis:
A family consisting of two parents and their son break into a home, kill the parents and kidnap their daughter. As the investigation proceeds, the BAU team begin to suspect that what they're dealing with is bigger than they thought.
Personal opinion:
The true idea of the episode is that the parents abduct the girls, because they try to find the perfect lover/wife for their son, who is 10 years old, and they treat this as a form of ritual; and also as an arranged marriage. We also find out that the mother of the boy was also kidnapped when she was young, so everything it's an endless cycle.
Throughout the episode the Romanians and the Romanian family is wrongly portrayed, beeing confused with the Romani, which is a minority. Dr. Reid says at one moments that the two shouldn't be seen as one, but besides that no one tries to diferentiate them. The Romanians are seen as being very religious, but also believing in rituals and superstitions; they are portrayed as violent, destructive, thiefs (the Romanian boy is taught to steal from pockets using small bells and there are also lots of things wrapped in tin foil, stolen from shops), rapists, wanting to live in USA but without trying to adapt or to be civilised, and their children are taught since little to behave in the same way. The whole episode in a potrayal of Romanians and Romani, but as I said, little distinction is made between the two.
Instances of Romanian in the episode: 'puiule' is used a lot by the mother to show love to the boy. 40:41 - "nu le spune despre fratii tai".
